Gok Wan on Dressing Confidently

TV presenter Gok Wan's hugely popular Channel 4 show 'How to look good naked' has gripped the nation and now he's here to share his top 10 tips on 'Dressing Confidently'

1. Dress your shape.

The first, the ultimate and the all important rule is - dress for your shape first, then follow trends. Know your body, be aware of what you look like. Take advice from a friend you can trust if you are unsure about this yourself.

2. Work your wardrobe.

Separate your wardrobe into three sections. Everyday, workwear and glamour. Remember that there is of course no reason why clothes can't cross over from one section to the other. Making simple divisions will allow you to see exactly what you have and make life easier when choosing what to wear.

3. Co-ordinate outfits.

Hang pieces that work together side by side in your wardrobe. So you remember what goes with what. Be aware of what works together. Have you gone out one day and received a lot of compliments? It's probably a lot to do with how you are dressed - take a Polaroid and keep as reference so you remember the outfit for future wear. Always dress to your strengths - other people may notice these more quickly than you

4. Underwear tips.

Underwear is very important to make sure everything is hoisted up to where it should be. To look good you need to give yourself the best possible silhouette. Stupid amounts of women in the UK are wearing the wrong size bra - have a bra fitting! Use magic underwear if you need it, it will make you feel more confident.

5. Style is ageless.

There is a misconception that women should dress for their age - where does that come from? It's so ageist and there isn't any excuse for it - you don't have to dress in 10 tonnes of polyester once you hit 50. Women don't have to dress for their age, because women are more than just their age - they should dress for their shape and their own taste.

6. Colour rules are rubbish.

Be wary of what you think you know about colour - black does make you look slimmer but there are no other colour rules. It's rubbish to say that redheads can't wear reds - I love the idea of redheads in red, it's all about your personality and what you can carry off.

7. Play with colour.

Colour is big news this season - white is the hot shade, mixed with lots of metallics. Bright primary colours are also huge - yellow, red, blue - again there is no reason not to wear certain colours just because you are a certain age - it's all about confidence.

8. Experiment.

Use your imagination when experimenting with colour. Just because yellow is big it doesn't mean you don't have to go round dressed like a daffodil - add accent colours to a plain outfit, for example use a yellow scarf and stilettos to brighten up a black suit.

9. Fashion care.

Take good care of your clothes - as a country we are very bad about doing this. We spend a lot of money on clothes and it is important to look after them. Bright fabrics are big this season, but without the right care and attention colours will fade and look jaded. Use a good detergent and cover delicate fabrics when hanging up.

10. Be green.

Take a green approach to your wardrobe - don't just dump garments that are looking a bit worn. At the end of every season I take all my black clothes and dye them black again. Washing clothes at a lower temperature will also protect them - and is eco-friendly too. Consider investing in a washing machine designed specifically for this purpose.
