Residents urged to turn out and clean up their streets.

Local residents in one area of Bristol are being asked to turn out to clean up their local community today, in a bid to help cut crime.

The idea is to clean up the streets around the Shirehampton area, scrubbing off grafitti and clearing up litter.

It's hoped this will help reduce crime and make it a more pleasant and safer place to live and work.

Cheryl Coles, Safer Bristol community safety officer said:

Last year lots of residents turned out to clear up the area and we want to do the same this year.  Shirehampton is a great place but it looks so much better after a good clean. Clearing any area of litter and debris can also help prevent the potential for crime and reduce the chances of injury to children.

Police Community Support Officer Zaheer BulBul added: "We will be cleaning all through the Ridge, Penpole Lane, Penpole Close, Woodview, during the course of the day. When we have had these clean ups in other local areas residents often tell us how satisfying they find it and really improve the area where they live."

Denise James manager of Bristol City Council Clean and Green Team said: "We will supply gloves, litter pickers and bags and the clean and
green team and arrange for bulky items that have been flytipped to be removed."

Volunteers are asked to meet on Tuesday 27 July at 10am at Penpole Residents Association, The Ridge. Penpole Lane
