Bristol City FC Meet Sainsbury's To Discuss Future

Monday, July 26th 2010 00:00

Proposed Sainsbury's store at Ashton Gate

Bristol City FC are meeting with Sainsbury's to discuss how they are going to win over planning officers at Bristol City Council.

It comes after their application to turn Ashton Gate into a supermarket was turned down last week.

The football club say building the store on their current ground is the only way they can fund their new 30,000 seater stadium at Ashton Vale.

They have now either got to appeal the decision, or submit a new application.

Chief Executive, Colin Sexstone told us they are trying to go about the process in the right way, in the hope that they can change planners' minds:

"What we don't particularly want to do is get into a full scale battle with the council because we know that the majority of people on the council want this to happen.  They're keen for a stadium, they're keen for the World Cup, they're keep to look at an arena, they're keen to get jobs.  The council hasn't got any money; we know that.  Why would they be fighting this, because it's going to achieve some of the principal aims for the city?"

He added that he thinks it will be hard to improve on their current application:

"Obviously this was a Sainsbury's application and they did the most detailed consultation with the local residents.  They had already taken many, many points on board.  That is the annoying thing.  This application was changed significantly to make it much more acceptable.  So that was the surprise.  It was almost as if there hadn't been any consultation."

He also told us the earliest their new stadium will be completed now is August 2013.

Yesterday thousands of football fans attended an Open Day at Ashton Gate, which included a question and answer session.

The football club is also waiting to find out the results of the Town and Village Green application, made by local residents for the Ashton Vale site.

There has also been concern from some local residents that the proposed Sainsburys store at Ashton Gate would take business away from shops on North Street in Bedminster.
