A statue of Bristol's well known shipping figure Samuel Plimsoll will come out of storage today and be unveiled in a new location.
The statue of Samuel Plimsoll was originally sited on Hotwell Road but had to be removed because of a series of works to improve water quality to the floating harbour. That was back in 2005 and the monument has been shut away ever since.
Today Samuel Plimsoll will be unveiled by Bristol's Lord Mayor, Councillor Christopher Davies in his new location at Capricorn Quay on the historic harbourside.
He said: ‘The moving of this statue to a more prominent position within the Harbour will bring recognition to one of Bristol's famous Son's, and I am delighted to unveil this bust of famous fellow Bristolian Samuel Plimsoll. His achievement is in establishing legislation safeguarding the lives of Seafarers Worldwide. The Plimsoll Line marking seen on every ship throughout the world was an initiative idea that saved countless lives, and ships, by preventing the overloading of cargoes.'
Bristol Council Leader, Barbara Janke added: ‘The relocation of Samuel Plimsoll to the historic neighbourhood of Hotwells is a fitting and happy occasion for the area. Plimsoll was a man who shaped seafaring forever and I am so pleased that he is now positioned with his new plaque, overlooking Bristol's most iconic ship, the ss Great Britain.'
Wessex Water, Clifton and Hotwells Improvement Society and Bristol City Council are paying for the relocation of the statue.
