Image of proposed Sainsbury's store on Winterstokes RoadPlans for the supermarket to move into the site of Bristol City Football Club's current home are being discussed tonight.
Today's decision could potentially have a big impact on the whole of the city.
Sainsbury's intends to build a new supermarket at the Ashton Gate site creating new jobs for the area.
The plans also include an application to build 145 flats along with office and shop space at the Winterstokes Road site.
Selling the land to the chain is a crucial part of Bristol City Football club's plans to build a new 30,000 seat stadium.
The deal will help to finance the £92 million pound development at Ashton Vale.
Last week it was revealed that planning officers had recommended all the plans for approval but the final decision will be made tonight by the committee.
It's also been suggested that a 10,000 seat arena could be built next to the new stadium if the plans come off.
An agreement has been drawn up between Bristol City Council and the football club to create a new venue.
The plans are in the very early stages and an exact site for the proposed arena hasn't been decided on yet, plus it all rests on the stadium plans getting the green light.
Another hurdle the football club faces is an application made by local residents in Ashton Vale for the proposed stadium site to given 'Town Green' status. The result of an inquiry into the request is expected soon, but if it is granted it will mean the land can't be built on.
Tonight's meeting to discuss the Sainsbury's application starts at 6pm at the Council House.
